Dr. Christopher Sabo Yilgwan is a Professor of Pediatrics and Cardiovascular Health at the University of Jos College of Health Sciences and Chief Medical Director of Plateau State Specialist Hospital in Jos, Nigeria. He earned his medical degree from the University of Jos, completed his pediatric residency at Jos University Teaching Hospital, and obtained his PhD in Public Health from Walden University, Minneapolis.
Dr. Yilgwan is a clinical epidemiologist and Fogarty/NIH-trained physician-scientist with over 15 years of experience in public health research focusing on infectious diseases and social determinants of health. He has served as co-investigator for major international studies including the Rheumatic Heart Disease Global Registry (REMEDY), the genetics of rheumatic heart disease study (RHDGen), and served as country PI for COVID-19 mortality reviews across 13 Nigerian states under WHO support.
Currently a member of the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's rheumatic heart disease technical working group, Dr. Yilgwan leads community-based research initiatives aimed at preventing rheumatic heart disease and improving cardiovascular outcomes in underserved populations. He serves as a research mentor to young academics across Africa and is actively involved in policy development through his leadership of the Plateau State chapter of the Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria.
