Professor Solomon Olusegun Nwhator is Professor of Periodontal Medicine at Obafemi Awolowo University and Honorary Consultant Periodontologist at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex.
Professor Nwhator earned his dental degree from the University of Lagos and PhD in Periodontology from the University of Helsinki, complemented by a Certificate in Leadership and Management in Health from the University of Washington. A Fellow of both the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Surgeons, he serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Nigerian Dental Journal.
Professor Nwhator has pioneered groundbreaking research establishing critical links between periodontal disease and systemic conditions including diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and preterm birth. His validation of the chairside aMMP-8 diagnostic test in 2013 revolutionized point-of-care periodontal assessment in Africa.
With over 60 peer-reviewed publications and significant contributions to understanding oral-systemic health connections, particularly in Black populations, he continues to shape dental research and policy across the continent. His work bridges the critical gap between oral health and overall medical care, advancing the field of periodontal medicine in Africa.
