Dr. Christopher Yilgwan is Professor of Pediatrics and Cardiovascular Health at the University of Jos and an Honorary Consultant Pediatric Cardiologist at Jos University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria. He currently serves as Chief Medical Director of Plateau State Specialist Hospital, combining clinical and academic medicine with health-system leadership.


Dr. Yilgwanearned his medical degree from the University of Jos and completed his Pediatrics residency at Jos University Teaching Hospital. He subsequently earned a PhD in Public Health from Walden University and received additional NIH/Fogarty-supported training in clinical and public-health research.


His research focuses on the social determinants and prevention of cardiovascular disease in resource-limited settings, with particular expertise in rheumatic heart disease, hypertension, and cardiovascular outcomes related to pregnancy. He has contributed to major multicountryinitiatives including the REMEDY rheumatic heart disease registry and RHDGen and has helped shape international research priorities for rheumatic heart disease through the NIH/NHLBI working group.


Dr. Yilgwan is deeply committed to mentorship and building research capacity for the next generation of African clinicians and investigators, bringing together clinical cardiology, population health, community engagement, and health policy to improve cardiovascular outcomes in underserved populations.

The Cardiovascular Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) international nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting cardiovascular education, research and patient care in Africa and the African Diaspora.
