Ogochukwu Sokunbi, MBBS is a pediatric cardiologist with extensive experience in congenital heart disease and pediatric cardiac interventions. She is currently a pediatric cardiology fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, having previously served as Senior Lecturer at the University of Lagos and Honorary Consultant Pediatric Cardiologist at Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
Dr. Sokunbi earned her medical degree from the University of Lagos and completed postgraduate training in Pediatrics through both the West African College of Physicians and National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. She subsequently pursued specialized training in Pediatric Cardiology at Frontier Lifeline Hospital in Chennai, India, followed by advanced training in Pediatric Interventional Cardiology at Apollo Children’s Hospital.
In Nigeria, Dr. Sokunbi was part of the pioneering team that established routine congenital cardiac catheterization and interventions, including Nigeria’s first transcatheter device closure of a perimembranous ventricular septal defect. She has also worked to establish and strengthen indigenous pediatric cardiac surgical programs, with an emphasis on developing sustainable local expertise.
An active educator and researcher, Dr. Sokunbi has published extensively in pediatric and cardiovascular medicine and contributed as an expert reviewer to FIFA’s consensus recommendations on cardiac screening and emergency action planning in youth football. Her work is driven by a commitment to advancing comprehensive pediatric cardiac care and adapting best practices to deliver safe, sustainable care in resource-limited settings.
