Uvie Onakpoya MBBS

Uvie Onakpoya, MBBS is a Professor of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Obafemi Awolowo University and Consultant Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. His clinical expertise includes adult and pediatric cardiac surgery, congenital heart surgery, thoracic surgery, and the development of sustainable cardiac surgery programs

After earning his medical degree from the University of Benin, Professor Onakpoya completed residency training in general surgery at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital before undertaking advanced cardiothoracic surgery training at Alexandria University in Egypt and further fellowship training in pediatric and congenital heart surgery at the Sheba Medical Center in Israel.

Professor Onakpoya has been a pioneer in advancing cardiac surgery in Nigeria, helping establish open-heart surgery programs while mentoring the next generation of cardiothoracic surgeons. He has authored numerous scientific publications and remains actively involved in research, education, and international collaboration. Through his leadership and commitment to capacity building, he continues to strengthen cardiovascular care across Nigeria and West Africa.
