Dr. Theofanie Mela is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a cardiac electrophysiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. She earned her medical degree from the University of Athens School of Medicine and completed postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, followed by Cardiology fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Mela is a nationally recognized expert in cardiac implantable electronic devices, cardiac resynchronization therapy, physiologic pacing, and lead management. At Massachusetts General Hospital, she serves as Director of the Lead Management Program and has also led the Pacemaker and ICD Clinic for many years. Her clinical and research work has contributed to advances in device safety, lead management, remote monitoring, and pacing strategies.
She has served as a principal investigator for numerous multicenter clinical trials, including BLOCK HF and VEST, and has contributed extensively to clinical research in pacing and device therapy. She was also a member of the writing committee for the 2023 HRS/APHRS/LAHRS Guideline on Cardiac Physiologic Pacing for the Avoidance and Mitigation of Heart Failure.
In addition to her clinical and academic work, Dr. Mela is committed to international cardiovascular education. Most recently, she joined the Cardiovascular Education Foundation in Nigeria, where she helped teach and advance left bundle branch area pacing, bringing contemporary physiologic pacing techniques to physicians and trainees.
