Mahmoud Abdou MD

Mahmoud Abdou, MD, FACC is an advanced heart failure and transplant cardiologist at Emory Healthcare, where he serves as Medical Director of the LVAD and Mechanical Circulatory Support Program and Associate Program Director of the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine. His clinical interests include advanced heart failure, cardiogenic shock, mechanical circulatory support, cardiac transplantation, and pulmonary hypertension.

Originally from Libya and born in Alexandria, Egypt, Dr. Abdou earned his medical degree from Benghazi University School of Medicine. He completed Internal Medicine residency and Cardiovascular Disease fellowship at Emory University, followed by advanced fellowship training in Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology at Indiana University. Before returning to Emory, he practiced at Northeast Georgia Health System, where he played a key role in establishing its destination-therapy LVAD program.

Dr. Abdou is deeply committed to medical education and the development of the next generation of cardiovascular specialists. He has received multiple awards for excellence in teaching and service, including the Juha Kokko Award and Golden Apple Award. His academic and clinical work focuses on improving the care of patients with advanced heart failure through mechanical circulatory support, innovative heart failure monitoring, multidisciplinary shock care, and physician education.
