Joel Dunning MBBCh, PhD

Joel Dunning, BA (Hons), BM BCh (Oxon), PhD, FRCS is a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at James Cook University Hospital in the United Kingdom and an internationally recognized leader in evidence-based cardiothoracic surgery, surgical education, and global health. Following medical training at the University of Oxford and research at the University of Manchester, he has dedicated his career to translating evidence into clinical practice through research, guideline development, and education.

Mr. Dunning has led the development of numerous international clinical practice guidelines for the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), including the landmark guidelines for cardiac arrest after cardiac surgery. He also helped develop the internationally adopted Cardiac Advanced Life Support (CALS) and REACT training programs for managing emergencies in the cardiac surgical and catheterization laboratory settings.

Clinically, he specializes in minimally invasive thoracic surgery and has advanced the care of patients with pectus deformities through national guideline development and the NHS-funded RESTORE trial. As Co-Editor-in-Chief of CTSNet and founder of Pace4Life, he continues to promote surgical education and expand access to life-saving cardiac care in underserved communities worldwide.
