Akram M. Zaaqoq, MD, MPH, FCCM is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and Medical Director of the Thoracic and Cardiovascular ICU. A cardiothoracic intensivist with extensive expertise in the care of patients undergoing complex cardiac and vascular surgery, Dr. Zaaqoqchampions a multidisciplinary approach that integrates surgeons, intensivists, anesthesiologists, nurses, and allied health professionals to optimize patient outcomes.


He is an internationally recognized educator in mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), mechanical circulatory support, ARDS, and shock. His research focuses on systemic inflammation, critical illness, and optimizing mechanical circulatory support, and he has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications that have advanced the care of critically ill patients.


Dr. Zaaqoq also serves in leadership roles within national and international critical care organizations, including ELSO and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

The Cardiovascular Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) international nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting cardiovascular education, research and patient care in Africa and the African Diaspora.
